How it works

  • Enroll online

Get started by filling out the online enrollment application to find out if you are eligible for assistance.

  • Pre-qualification

NiceRx verifies your eligibility for medication assistance and notifies you if you are pre-qualified. The pharmaceutical company provides your medication for free, and you only pay our service fee.

  • Submit documents

We will request documents to be submitted by you and your healthcare provider that are required by the pharmaceutical company to complete your enrollment.

  • Receive medication

Once approved, the pharmaceutical company typically ships a 90-day supply of medication to your home or healthcare provider’s address. Final acceptance is determined by the pharmaceutical company.

What is Iressa?

Iressa is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by AstraZeneca for cancer treatment.

Iressa is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor used for the first-line treatment of patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (metastatic NSCLC) whose tumors have epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) exon 19 deletions or exon 21 substitution mutations as detected by an FDA-approved test. EGFR is overexpressed in the cells of certain types of human carcinomas – for example in lung and breast cancers.

The safety and efficacy of Iressa have not been established in patients whose tumors have EGFR mutations other than exon 19 deletions or exon 21 substitution mutations.

What doses of Iressa are available?

Iressa is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 250 mg.

The recommended dose is Iressa 250 mg tablet orally, once daily with or without food, until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Your healthcare provider will do blood tests to check your liver function during your treatment with IRESSA.

If you miss a dose take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if your next dose is less than 12 hours away. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

Always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Iressa active ingredients

Gefitinib reversibly blocks kinase enzyme activity of wild-type and certain activating mutations of EGFR, preventing autophosphorylation of tyrosine residues associated with the receptor. This inhibits further downstream signaling and blocks EGFR-dependent proliferation.

Iressa side effects

The most common adverse drug reactions of Iressa in clinical trials include:

  • Skin reactions – acne, dry skin, and pruritus
  • Diarrhea

In rare instances, Iressa can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Interstitial lung disease (ILD) – withhold treatment for worsening of respiratory symptoms, discontinue if ILD is confirmed
  • Hepatotoxicity – obtain regular liver function testing. Withhold treatment for Grade 2 or higher for ALT and/or AST elevations
  • Gastrointestinal perforation
  • Ocular disorders including keratitis

Call your healthcare provider for medical advice, they will assess the benefits of using Iressa against your risk of side effects. Patients are encouraged to report negative side effects or adverse reactions of Iressa to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Iressa drug interactions

Iressa can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Strong CYP3A4 Inducer
  • CYP3A4 Inhibitor
  • Drugs affecting gastric pH – avoid use with proton pump inhibitors, antacids, H2 blockers
  • Warfarin – monitor changes in prothrombin time or INR

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Iressa.

Iressa contraindications

You should not use Iressa if you:

  •  Have had an allergic reaction to the active ingredient gefitinib
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Iressa
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – can cause fetal harm. Use effective contraception
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – It is not known if this drug passes into breast milk

Before taking Iressa, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Iressa
