What is Tarceva?
Tarceva is a medication that is taken to treat cancer. It’s used most often to treat late-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and pancreatic cancers. For NSCLC, Tarceva can be used in combination with some types of chemotherapy, especially if the first round of chemotherapy isn’t effective. For pancreatic cancer, Tarceva can be taken in combination with gemcitabine if your cancer is metastatic (has spread).
The medication is taken orally, usually swallowed as a tablet. It can be prescribed as the first medication to treat cancer but is most often used in combination with other treatments, or when other treatments have been unsuccessful.
Tarceva active ingredients
The active ingredient in Tarceva is called erlotinib. Some non-small cell lung cancer cells and pancreatic cancer cells can have a mutation in a protein called EGFR. This mutation can help the cancer cells grow and divide. Erlotinib works by interfering with the way EGFR proteins function, limiting how well they help cancerous cells grow and divide.
Tarceva side effects & drug interactions
Like all medications, Tarceva can have side effects. The most common Tarceva side effects may affect more than 1 in 10 people. These include headaches, depression, loss of appetite, susceptibility to infection, nausea, fatigue, and diarrhea and vomiting. More serious, but rarer side effects can include interstitial lung disease, gastrointestinal perforation, and kidney and liver problems.
