What is Lyrica?

Lyrica is a medicine prescribed to adults over 18 years of age to treat:

  • Pain from damaged nerves caused by a spinal cord injury, diabetes, or shingles (herpes zoster)
  • Fibromyalgia (pain all over your body)
  • Partial seizure epilepsy (seizures that begin in one hemisphere of the brain) alongside other epilepsy medication
  • General anxiety disorder

The medication helps with these conditions as it affects processes in your central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It slows down the impulses that can cause epilepsy, it disrupts pain signals, and it can reduce the symptoms of anxiety disorders. Lyrica is taken orally, usually as a capsule or an oral solution.

More information on what is Lyrica

Lyrica active ingredients

The active ingredient in Lyrica is called pregabalin. Once swallowed, pregabalin is absorbed into your bloodstream through your intestines. It travels in your blood to your brain, where it passes into your central nervous system.

Pregabalin then acts as a central nervous system depressant. This means it reduces the number of signals that pass through your brain and spinal cord. This dampening effect can alleviate the symptoms of anxiety, interrupt the passage of pain signals, and reduce the brain activity that can trigger epileptic seizures.

Lyrica side effects & Lyrica drug interactions

The most common Lyrica side effects include a dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, blurred vision, weight gain, and swelling of your hands and feet. In rarer cases, Lyrica can cause more serious side effects like dry mouth, muscle pain and weakness, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, constipation, and eyesight changes like blurring or loss of vision. If you experience any visual side effects, talk to your physician immediately.

Lyrica can cause an increase in suicidal thoughts in a small percentage of people (roughly 1 in 500 people). If you feel you’re thinking more about suicide, or if you experience an increase in depression symptoms, contact a healthcare professional immediately.

Don’t stop taking Lyrica without talking to your physician first, as stopping suddenly can cause certain side effects to increase. If you’d like to stop taking Lyrica, talk to your physician about reducing your dose gradually.

Some Lyrica side effects can impair your ability to drive or use machinery. Don’t drive, use machinery, or engage in other dangerous activities until you’re confident you know how Lyrica affects you.

Lyrica can interact with other medications. This can change how it and the other medications work and can make side effects more likely. Tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins and dietary supplements.

In particular, tell them if you’re taking:

  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
  • Diabetes medications Avandia (rosiglitazone), Avandamet (contains rosiglitazone and metformin), or Actos (pioglitazone)
  • Any tranquilizers
  • Any narcotic pain medicines, like oxycodone
  • Any medications for anxiety, like lorazepam
  • Any medications that make you feel sleepy

Don’t drink alcohol when taking Lyrica, as alcohol can make some side effects worse, like dizziness and drowsiness.

Lyrica warnings & precautions

Don’t take Lyrica if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient pregabalin
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients found in Lyrica (listed in the leaflet which comes with the medication)
  • Are under 18 years of age

Talk to your physician before taking Lyrica if you:

  • Have a heart condition or a history of heart disease
  • Have kidney problems or are on dialysis
  • Have a bleeding problem
  • Have diabetes
  • Have ever had angioedema (swelling of your face, mouth, tongue, lips, gums, neck, or throat)
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Plan to father a child (there may be a risk that Lyrica can reduce fertility or cause birth defects)
  • Are over 65 years of age
