What is Epclusa?

Epclusa is a prescription medicine given to adults to treat hepatitis C. It’s usually prescribed to treat chronic (long-lasting) infections of the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 virus genotypes (these are the different versions of the virus). Epclusa can be taken by itself to treat a hepatitis C infection, or with another medication called ribavirin. The medication is swallowed as a tablet.

Hepatitis C is a disease caused by an infection of a hepatitis C virus. When you first get infected, you may have relatively mild symptoms, like a fever, dark urine, abdominal pain, and a yellow tinge to your skin. Some people have no symptoms at all. Hepatitis C is usually spread through blood, such as by sharing needles for drug use or using poorly sterilized medical equipment.

A small proportion of people clear the virus from their body, but in 75% to 85% of infected people, the virus lives on in the liver. At first you may feel no symptoms, but over time the infection can cause damage (liver disease) and reduce your liver function (cirrhosis). This could lead to liver failure and liver cancer. Although chronic hepatitis C infections can last for a long time, your body can overcome the infection, particularly with mediations like Epclusa. Epclusa stops the virus from being able to copy itself and spread through your cells, giving your body a better chance to kill it.

Epclusa active ingredients

Epclusa has two active ingredients in one tablet, called sofosbuvir and velpatasvir. They both work by stopping the hepatitis C virus from producing proteins it needs to copy itself. Viruses harm you by copying themselves (replication) and spreading through your body. To replicate themselves, they need to produce proteins that help them copy their DNA. But sofosbuvir and velpatasvir stops the hepatitis C virus from being able to produce two of these proteins. This slows how fast the virus replicates and spreads, and helps your immune system to overcome the infection.
