What is Nuvigil?
Nuvigil is a prescription medication used to help people feel more awake. It’s taken to improve wakefulness in people who have excessive sleepiness caused by narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD). Nuvigil helps with these sleep disorders by increasing activity in your central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), making you feel more awake.
Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that disrupts your body’s ability to regulate its sleep-wake cycle. It can cause people to feel excessively sleepy in the daytime and can make them fall asleep for brief periods.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disorder where soft tissue inside your throat blocks or partially blocks your airway as you sleep. It can reduce or stop your breathing, waking you up. This can happen multiple times per night, keeping you awake and limiting how much sleep you get.
Shift work disorder is caused when people have to work during the hours they’d normally be asleep (i.e. at night). It can lead to difficulties in sleeping and insomnia, resulting in excessive sleepiness.
Nuvigil active ingredients
The active ingredient in Nuvigil is called armodafinil. Armodafinil is a central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) stimulant, although the exact mechanism of action isn’t understood in detail. The medication may work by increasing levels of dopamine in your brain. Dopamine is a chemical that helps the neurons in your brain to communicate with each other.
Nuvigil side effects & Nuvigil drug interactions
As with all medications, Nuvigil can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience side effects or have the same ones. The most common Nuvigil side effects include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and insomnia. Less common side effects include fatigue, anxiety, depression, heart palpitations, decreased appetite, and tremors.
This isn’t a full list of side effects. For more details see the patient leaflet that comes with the medication. Speak to your physician if you have any concerns about Nuvigil side effects.
Nuvigil can interact with other medications. This can alter the way Nuvigil and the other medications work, and it can increase the chances of you experiencing certain side effects.
Tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins and dietary supplements. In particular, tell them if you’re taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors, warfarin, and medications based on CYP3A4/5 and CYP2C19 enzymes, like steroidal contraceptives, cyclosporine, midazolam, phenytoin, and diazepam.
Nuvigil may interact with hormonal birth control methods like birth control pills, patches, and implants. You should use additional contraceptive methods if you take Nuvigil, like condoms or a diaphragm with spermicide.
