What is Escitalopram?

Escitalopram is a generic antidepressant medication that is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults and/or children who are at least 12 years of age. It is also used off-label to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Escitalopram belongs to a class of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI).

Escitalopram increases the activity of serotonin, a chemical in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter (a messenger chemical that carries signals between nerve cells in the brain) that is thought to have a good influence on mood, emotion, and sleep. After carrying a message, serotonin is usually reabsorbed by the nerve cells. Escitalopram works by blocking this reabsorption, leaving more serotonin available to pass further messages between nerve cells.
